I cannot remember a time when I was not drawing or coloring with
crayons. First, I drew trees, clouds and the sun. Then, I drew paper
dolls and their outfits, then portraits of my family and Dad's
co-workers. School projects were next, such as slides for my
fourth-grade unit on pioneers. I drew and painted throughout high
school. But in undergraduate and graduate school at Washington
University in St. Louis, I made the decision to major in History of
Art instead of Fine Arts. This choice enabled me to have a historical
as well as a global perspective of art.
I have painted on many
surfaces - from clothing to upholstery to china - but the last ten
years I am once again painting in watercolor, pastel and oil and I
feel I have come home! A word of appreciation to the late Dixie Dove
Glenn for jump-starting me back into painting. Much gratitude to Donna
Aldridge, teacher extraordinaire, my mentor and cheerleader for four
years. And most of all, hats off to my family for their
unflagging support and tolerance of the time and mess that art
requires!
