HistoryThe MidAmerica Pastel Society (MAPS) formed July 14th, 1998 when a group of local Kansas City area artists found their favorite medium, pastel, was being overlooked as a serious art form by local, regional and national art show sponsors. Determined to prove that pastel, with its centuries-long history, stability as a medium, and rich vibrant beauty was every bit as viable a permanent art medium as oil or watercolor, these artists formed a non-profit society to foster their passion for pastel. As a group of artists in a formal pastel society, MAPS has become a force better able to capture the attention of an audience of art patrons, critics and show jurors.
The purpose of the MidAmerica Pastel Society is to bring together practicing pastel artists as a group to network, to educate and promote community interest and support for the medium of pastel in the visual arts, to support these pastel artists in their artistic development, exhibit work as a group and individually; to provide teaching workshops for further development of artists using pastel and to make a contribution to the community through the development of student artists in the pastel medium. |

AffiliationsThe MidAmerica Pastel Society is affiliated with the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) whose objective is “to celebrate worldwide, the expanding presence of Dry Pastel as a major fine art painting medium,” and to “provide a strong voice for pastel artists and the luminous medium of "Pastel".” IAPS is a non-profit organization representing pastel societies uniting in a common cause — to demonstrate the validity and quality of pastel fine art around the world. Additionally, MAPS is affiliated with a sister pastel society located in Victor Harbour, Australia, The Pastel Artists of South Australia (PASA). MAPS and PASA participate in joint exhibitions, share news and information. |
