Jim "Two Crows" Wallen, national award-winning historical folklorist and author was the featured guest at the September meeting of the MidAmerica Pastel Society. Two Crows spun tale after tale of unique American West history as he posed for seven talented painters in a 2-hour figure painting demonstration. Johnson County 50+ Parks & Recreation 1st Annual Plein Air Painting Event, June, 2001, Shawnee Mission Park

The Johnson County 50+ Parks & Recreation 1st Annual Plein Air Painting Event took place June 8th, 2001 at Shawnee Mission Park.  This event was co-sponsored by the Mid-America Pastel Society, the Greater Kansas City Art Association and Johnson County P&R.

Painters arrived early in the morning and painted outside until 4:00 p.m. Bright, clear weather provided great lighting conditions, though the heat was building by mid-afternoon. Then they framed their paintings and transported them to the Tomahawk Country Club for an evening auction. Donna Aldridge won "Best in Show" and Donna Carrington took "People's Choice" awards. The event was pronounced a success and all participants look foward to next year's 2nd Annual Plein Air opportunities.
