2007-2008 $500 Art Student Scholarship
NOTE: Due to a lack of applicants, there was no 2007-2008 award given. Please consider applying for the 2008-2009 academic year.
To further the development of student artists in the medium of pastel, the MidAmerica Pastel Society, annually grants $500.00 to a qualifying student attending a higher education institution in the Kansas-Missouri region and majoring in Fine Arts. The student selected for the 2008-2009 MAPS Scholarship will be granted student membership in the MidAmerica Pastel Society and be mentored by the artist members.
Eligibility: Open to college students majoring in fine art.
Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2008.

Determination: The scholarship winner will be determined by committee and notified by December 31, 2008. The scholarship winner will be invited to attend the January, 2009 General Meeting of the MidAmerica Pastel Society to receive the award. The award may be used to supplement tuition, purchase artist materials or in any manner student may choose.

2. A “Letter of Artistic Intent” may be used by the applicant to describe the type of art education desired, the primary artistic vision motivating the applicant to create or how the student envisions his/her future as a practicing artist. A statement indicating how the student will use the scholarship monies would be appropriate, but is not required.
3. A copy of the applicant’s college or university transcript is required.(Photocopy is acceptable.) It will be used to determine the declared major of the student and that the student has been enrolled and has completed at minimum their freshman year.
4. Letters of Reference from two (2) individuals are requested. These individuals should have knowledge of the student and his/her artistic desires. Personality of the student, artistic vision and/or talent and potential capabilities can be addressed. Letters will be used to give the committee an indication of the personality of the applicant and the likelihood that they will continue to pursue a career in the fine arts.
5. Portfolio Images are defined as images of the applicant’s past paintings. Artworks should have been completed within the past two years. At least one image should be a work incorporating at least 80% pastel pigment (oil pastels are not acceptable). A painting completed during a class or instructor-led studio is acceptable, but it should be the creation of the student alone. Images can be submitted as slides, digital images on a cd-rom, or photographs. Images should not show frames, clips, or hands holding the painting, but should only show the image of the art itself.
